Motion Capture : Designing for NASA's Orion Crew Module

Join the Motion Capture (MOCAP) team from the New York Institute of Technology and the Computer Science Lead from United Space Alliance for an inside look at how NYIT has contributed to the smart design process of the Orion Crew Module mockup being utilized at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in a motion capture application. The Orion, part of NASA's new Constellation Program, will be replacing the existing Space Shuttle Program which is scheduled to end next year.

The NYIT MOCAP team led by Prof. Peter Voci, MFA Director at the College of Arts and Sciences. Along with David Voci, Animation Director at THE STUDIO, and Jon Squitieri, NYIT MoCap Project Manager, they will illustrate the project and discuss how multiple person motion tracking is used to improve the efficiency of the module’s complex design and assembly. Brad Lawrence, from United Space Alliance, will illustrate how motion capture technology and human factors software are being used to identify potential ergonomic risks in several applications, including the Orion project in which technicians will be working during the module's processing phase. This work is currently being performed at United Space Alliance's Human Engineering Modeling and Performance Lab (HEMAP).
