What happens when creative output becomes a battlefield? In this panel, Nick Goodman, senior partner at Quirk & Bakalor, and Jacques Rimokh, partner at Loeb & Loeb, who are both leading attorneys specializing in intellectual property rights, and Marjorie Heins from the Free Expression Policy Project at NYU's Brennan Center for Justice, will discuss several cases of interest to those working with digital media. These cases touch on such issues as originality, collaboration, fair use, protectibility, and more. Get an inside look at what really happens when copyright issues go to court - and learn from the mistakes of others
Event Acting and Storytelling for Animators (New York City, from Apr 06, 2006 06:00 PM to Apr 06, 2006 08:00 PM)
Are you an animator but you're not quite sure how to get "into character"? Do your animations need better "actors"? This course is a combination of script, story and character analysis techniques from the traditional acting discipline and a series of movement based characterization exercises applying the principles of acting to 3D characters. Through this process non-actors responsible for creating and manipulating virtual characters can have a greater understanding of the actor and director's creative process and contribute to the whole process to a greater degree. Our presenter for the evening is John Finnegan (see bio below).

Our first monthly hang of the new program year will be taking place on Wednesday, September 7, 2005 at Phebe's Tavern & Grill. So you've always wanted the chance to see your work on the big screen. (The big screen in this case is a snazzy plasma TV.) Maybe it's a completed animation or maybe it's just some roughs you've got so far on the way to completion. Or some effects shots you're dying to show. Whatever it is, as long as it was produced on a computer and includes CGI we want to give you the opportunity to show it.

This presentation will provide an in-depth view of the backend production departments at Walt Disney Feature Animation including Look Development, EFX, and Shot Finalling. Process evolution from legacy films to cutting edge technology used in current releases will be covered along with a comprehensive look at how Disney artists utilize creativity, problem solving skills, teamwork and a variety of software tools to create stunning images for Disney's animated films.

BYOA is BACK!!! Our monthly hang will be taking place on Wednesday, April 6, 2005 at Phebe's Tavern & Grill. Phebe's is a new venue in the same location as last year's BYOA home. The back room has been renovated with more tables and chairs so it will be easier to eat something and give us more fleixibility as far as letting people get as close to the TV as they want. And the whole AV system has been upgraded. There is now a brand new plasma TV with a new room sound system so that we'll be able to see (and hear) all your animation as they were meant to be.

NYC ACM SIGGRAPH is proud to present Digigirls, a collective of professional artists, doctors, curators, animators, and academics who utilize a broad spectrum of approaches to the digital arts. The group supports a continuous and progressive dialogue on social sculpture, 3D animation, video, photography, form, painting and drawing through informal and supportive meetings. The evening will include presentations by Andrea Ackerman, Lillian Ball, Perry Bard, Lisa Crafts, Kathleen Graves, Victoria Faust, Jerelyn Hanrahan, Claudia Hart, Julia Heyward, Joan Logue, with each Digigirl presenting their approach to the digital domain and showing brief examples of their work. The presentation will conclude with an interactive dialogue, questions, and discussion with the audience.
